Powered by the Sun: How our Barista NC II Batch R4 Ran Almost 100% on Solar Energy

High-Volume Operations, Minimal Grid Impact

Running commercial espresso machines, heavy-duty grinders, and industrial coffee roasters demands serious electrical power. Hosting an intensive, hands-on barista training cohort typically leads to a massive surge in energy consumption and utility overhead. 

However, thanks to our state-of-the-art solar power facility, Kaluppâ Foundation achieved an extraordinary 98.7% solar energy independence throughout the entire month of June. Out of all the energy needed to power the facility, host daily training modules, and execute our historic first test roast of Green Coffee Beans (GCBs) on June 2, less than 1.3% came from the traditional electrical grid.

Measurable Environmental & Economic Impact

Beyond proving energy reliability, operating on nearly 100% clean power yields direct, tangible benefits for both our operating budget and our local environment: 

• ₱12,500 to ₱14,000 Saved in Electricity Costs: By producing over 900 kWh of clean solar power on-site, the SSF facility shielded operations from heavy commercial utility charges during our highest-demand month. 

• Over 620 kg of CO2 Emissions Avoided: By avoiding reliance on grid power, Kaluppâ prevented approximately 620 to 635 kg of carbon dioxide from entering our atmosphere in June alone. 

• The Equivalent of Planting a Mini-Forest: This single month of avoided carbon emissions is equal to the annual carbon absorbed by 30 mature trees, or growing 10 urban tree seedlings over a decade!

Training the Next Generation of Sustainable Baristas

For the scholars of Batch R4, this TESDA-accredited program offered far more than standard national certification skills. Beyond mastering grind sizes, pulling the perfect espresso shot, and perfecting milk texturing according to TESDA Barista NC II standards, they actively participated in a live model of climate-smart entrepreneurship.

By drastically reducing grid reliance, we significantly cut operational overhead for our TVET institution while proving to local enterprise owners that sustainable technology is fully equipped to handle high-demand commercial equipment in Marinduque.

What’s Next for the Kaluppâ Roastery?

With our facility fully commissioned, green coffee bean test roasts underway, and a newly certified cohort of skilled baristas ready to serve, Kaluppâ Foundation is just getting started. But our vision extends far beyond our roastery doors. 

Alongside our valued partners in government, civil society, and local agricultural communities, we are actively laying the groundwork to build a complete, sustainable coffee value chain for Marinduque:

• Empowering Local Farmers: We are revisiting coffee growers across the island, validating existing coffee trees, assessing production capacities, and refining harvest and post-harvest processes.

• Building a Unified Network: We are working toward organizing local farmers into structured cooperatives and establishing centralized consolidation drop-off points to ensure fair, direct market access for their crops.

• Creating a Resilient Industry: From bean to cup, connecting farm validation, specialized TVET scholarship training, and solar-powered commercial roasting, we are committed to building an inclusive, thriving coffee ecosystem for all Marinduqueños. 

Together with our partners, we will continue to roast, train, and innovate—one green-powered cup at a time.
