A community of more than 80 volunteers united to plant 1,000 nipa seedlings along the Tawiran River—restoring ecosystems, strengthening livelihoods, and planting hope for future generations.
29 June 2025 | Tawiran River, Barangay Tawiran, Santa Cruz, Marinduque
What began as a vision to restore the Tawiran River and uplift local livelihoods blossomed into a powerful movement of unity and environmental stewardship. On June 29, 2025, more than 80 changemakers—youth leaders, farmers, barangay officials, civic organizations, government agencies, and uniformed personnel—came together at dawn to plant 1,000 nipa seedlings along a one kilometer stretch of the Tawiran River.
From the first light of morning, the riverbanks were alive with purpose: boots in the mud, hands in the soil, and hearts aligned toward a greener, more resilient Marinduque.
🌱 Why Nipa?
The nipa palm is a lifeline. It protects riverbanks from erosion, nurtures marine life, and supports sustainable livelihoods through nipa vinegar and eco friendly materials. Each seedling planted is a step toward ecological balance and community prosperity.
A Community United
This event showcased the extraordinary power of collaboration. The Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Tawiran, led by SK President Jhustin Rodil, played a vital role in mobilizing volunteers, coordinating logistics, and energizing the event with youthful leadership. Their partnership with the Sangguniang Barangay, under the guidance of Punong Barangay Bienvenido Palma, demonstrated how local governance and youth action can create transformative impact.
We also recognize the committed participation of APO Fraternity members, who once again showed up in service, continuing their long-standing tradition of supporting Kaluppâ’s environmental initiatives.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to our steadfast partners: Rotary Club of Metro Valenzuela, Inner Wheel Club of Valenzuela, and Rotary Club of Marinduque, organizations whose presence, resources, and encouragement helped bring this vision to life.
Service Beyond Duty: Uniformed Volunteers in Action
Standing shoulder to shoulder with civilian volunteers were our dedicated uniformed personnel, living examples of service that goes beyond their mandate.
Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Santa Cruz, supervised by FCINSP Hernan B. Yason and led on ground by SFO3 Ferdinand M. Cruzado.
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Santa Cruz, represented by SJO1 Jonathan S. Peñacerrada under the leadership of JSSUPT Clarence E. Mayangao.
Their consistent support for environmental initiatives since 2022 reflects a deep, admirable commitment to community-building and climate action.
PAWID POWER: Weaving Heritage, Building Sustainability
After hours of planting nipa along the riverbanks, volunteers gathered once more for HABILIN NG NIPA: Weaving Tradition, Building Sustainability. Here, participants tried weaving pawid—many for the first time, discovering the skill, rhythm, and cultural significance behind each fold.
Laughter and curiosity filled the air as nipa leaves transformed into woven pieces, reminding everyone that environmental protection and cultural heritage are deeply intertwined. It was a space for learning, sharing stories, and celebrating the traditions that strengthen our communities.
Together, We Plant Hope
The Tawiran River witnessed more than tree planting—it witnessed a community choosing renewal. A community planting for food security, for climate resilience, for cultural heritage, and for the generations who will inherit this river.
This is what hope looks like when people move together: 1,000 nipa seedlings, 80 changemakers, and one river revived.
