Airlayering (or marcotting) is an essential vegetative propagation technique taught in our Agri-Crops Production NC II curriculum. By encouraging a branch to form new roots while still attached to the parent tree, you create a genetically identical sapling that retains the mature fruiting capability of the mother plant.
Whether you have specialized tools on hand or just a basic plastic bag, mastering marcotting ensures you can expand your farm’s canopy efficiently and sustainably.
Tools & Materials Needed
Sharp Grafting Knife or Utility Blade (sanitized with 70% alcohol)
Rooting Soil Media (see recommended mixes below)
Enclosure Option A: Soft plastic sheet or clear plastic bag + Twine/Cable ties
Enclosure Option B: Reusable plastic rooting ball or propagation pod (clear, green, or black, you can buy these online!)
PPE: Clean gloves and safety glasses
Choosing Your Rooting Medium
At Kaluppâ, our primary rooting medium is a rich, moisture-retentive combination of garden soil and pure vermicast (or simply good, high-organic garden soil). You can adapt your medium based on what is readily available on your farm:
Garden Soil + Vermicast (Kaluppâ Choice): Provides natural moisture retention while supplying beneficial microbes and gentle nutrients to spur root growth.
Moist Cocopeat or Sphagnum Moss: Excellent for water holding capacity and lightweight handling.
Aged Compost + Rice Hull Blend: Great for aeration and structure around newly forming roots.

💡 The Sponge Test: No matter which medium you choose, always check moisture before packing. Squeeze a handful tightly, it should hold its shape and feel damp, but no water should drip out. Overly wet media can cause the girdled branch to rot.
Vermicast: Highly nutritious organic fertilizer produced from earthworm castings. It provides essential microbes to spur healthy, vigorous root growth on new clones.

Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH): Processed agricultural waste that helps condition the rooting medium. While it doesn't provide nutrients, it greatly improves drainage and aeration within the wrap.

Choosing the right enclosure depends on your resources and farm goals. While traditional soft plastic bags remain the most accessible option for everyday field propagation, reusable rooting pods offer a sustainable, long-term upgrade to eliminate single-use waste. The 5-Step Airlayering Process
Step 1: Select and Prepare the Branch
Choose a healthy, disease-free, pencil-thick branch (about 1–2 years old) receiving full sunlight. Locate an area just below a node, see below.
Step 2: Girdle the Bark (The Precision Cut)
Using your sanitized blade, make two parallel circular cuts around the branch, about 1 to 1.5 inches apart. Carefully peel away the ring of outer bark, inner bark, and the green cambium layer until the hard white wood underneath is exposed.
💡 Kaluppâ Pro-Tip: Scrape off the slippery cambium layer completely. If left intact, the branch will heal its bark over the wound instead of generating new roots.
Step 3: Pack the Rooting Medium
Take a handful of your prepared garden soil + vermicast mix (moistened to passing the sponge test). Pack the ball securely around the exposed wood ring.
Step 4: Secure the Enclosure
Using a Plastic Bag: Wrap the soil ball tightly into a "sausage" shape with soft plastic and tie both ends firmly with twine or cable ties to trap moisture.
Using a Rooting Ball: If practicing zero-waste propagation, fill both halves of the pod with your soil mix, clasp it around the branch cut, and snap the lock pins shut.
Step 5: Monitor and Harvest
Over the next 4 to 8 weeks (depending on tree species like Cacao, Citrus, or Mango, or flowering ornamentals such as kamuning), check for root development. Once a dense, healthy root system forms throughout the medium, sever the branch cleanly just below the wrap, pot it in rich organic soil, and keep it in partial shade until established.
Soft Plastic Wrap: The standard, budget-friendly choice. Clear or semi-translucent plastic tightly sealed with tape or string keeps moisture locked in while allowing easy monitoring of root development.
Reusable Rooting Pod: A modern, clip-on propagation ball that simplifies airlayering. Features built-in secure latches, watering ports, and a sturdy shell that protects delicate new roots from physical damage and UV light.
Root Growth Results: Opening the reusable pod after a few weeks reveals a strong, fully formed root system ready for potting and transplanting.
