AGRICULTURE AND ECONOMY
Kaluppâ is a Learning Site for Agriculture
As an LSA certified by the ATI*, we serve as a venue for training and other extension services like practical and hands-on learning for immediate application.
A Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA) is an innovative extension modality conceptualized by the Agricultural Training Institute where farmers worthy of emulation and willing to share their technologies right in their own farms will be partners in the implementation of training and extension interventions particularly for hands-on training or on-the-job instruction to complement classroom instruction.
___________
*ATI, or Agricultural Training Institute under the Department of Agriculture, is the capacity builder, knowledge bank and catalyst of the Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries extension system.
"The LSA is a farm that practices applicable agricultural technologies, employs doable farming strategies, and operates successfully, thus, worthy of emulation. The farmer/farm family is relatively advanced compared to the rest of the farmers."

The Kaluppâ Integrated Farm is a budding enterprise that is involved in the production of vegetables and fruits for consumption in and around the municipality of Santa Cruz, and when opportune, outside of Marinduque such as the NCR. Aiding us in this endeavor are our inhouse farmers and also our competent farm school trainers. We are committed to the improvement of food taste and nutritional quality.
By the end of 2022, we established a 60 sqm plant nursery dedicated to vegetable and fruit bearing tree seedlings. We also use this facility as a training venue for our “Perform Nursery Operations” course for our TESDA-accredited Agricultural Crops Production NC II program. And by the second quarter of 2023, we have already established a 1,000 sqm hilly vegetable farm with eggplants, cucumber, bitter gourd, string beans, ginger, and turmeric, among many others. A few months later, we also established a smaller 500 sqm demo farm that is nearer the nursery and farm school facilities.
As we press on forward with our farming activities, we were also met with some challenges, such as El Niño and extreme heat, that when solved, we will be on to become a more sustainable farm.

We approximately that more than half of all coconut trees in our facility are reaching the end of their productive lifecycle, that is why Kaluppâ identified the rejuvenation of coconut tree populations in the area as a priority.
As a DA-ATI accredited coconut-based learning site for agriculture, we are establishing a 500 sqm coconut nursery in the Kaluppâ Integrated Farm in Santa Cruz, Marinduque that aims to enhance the local supply of quality coconut seedlings using locally-sourced seed nuts and high-yield varieties. As of writing, our farmers and agriculture scholars have already collected 500+ coconut seedlings.
This project aims to:
Enhance the supply of quality seedlings using both local seed nuts and high-yield coconut varieties.
The demand for coconut and coconut products are increasing thus there is a huge interest in expanding coconut cultivation.
Farmers traditionally collect nut seedlings growing from dropped nuts at the base of trees without attention to prolificacy. In order to be more effective, a coconut seedlings nursery must be established.
Local coconut seedling nurseries should therefore be encouraged as their “success” will alleviate the pressure to import seed nuts thus avoiding the attendant risk of introducing exotic diseases.
Further, given that a coconut palm will live 50 to 70 years, the importance of carefully selecting premium quality coconut seedlings as a bedrock to develop and grow the industry cannot be over emphasized.
The poultry industry is one of the most profitable agribusinesses in the Philippines that provides meats and eggs for human consumption. But in order to reduce the production cost and thrive in the competitive poultry market, it would be wise to use unconventional, yet economical, nutrient-rich poultry feed alternative.
This program aims to provide poultry farmers a greener, cheaper, more effective, and readily-available feed alternative.
Vermicomposting is a process that relies on earthworms called African Night Crawlers (ANC) and microorganisms to help stabilize active organic materials and convert them to a valuable soil fertilizer called vermicast.
Organic fertilizer production therefore is an innovative, timely, and sustainable way to address the increase in waste by turning organic matter into inexpensive, effective, and nutrient-rich compost.
"Gusto ko pong matutunan ang vermicomposting kasi kailangan ko ito sa aking garden at pang-benta na rin. Sobrang nag-enjoy ako, tapos may nadagdag pang mga bagong kaalaman na mai-share ko sa aking pamilya, mga kakilala, at kaibigan."

Learning agribusiness has far-reaching benefits for farmer, agriculture students and everyone else in the farming industry. It presents great opportunities especially for small-holder farm development, as well as income generation. Aside from planting, seed sowing, soil testing, plant care, and the likes, a solid agribusiness knowhow will also provide them the basics of business planning, agroentrepreneurship, product development, pricing, and branding just to name a few.
"It has always been a policy of the State to ensure the food security of its people by making agriculture productive. Food security, however, is under threat as the country's population growth soars, while land resources for producing food continuously decline since these are being converted to residential and industrial lands. Besides, farmers have to contend with the negative impacts of climate change."
