In sustainable agriculture, true waste doesn't exist, it’s just an untapped resource. Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH), made by partially burning rice husks under controlled, low-oxygen conditions, is one of the most vital, versatile ingredients in organic gardening.
At Kaluppâ, we put circular farming into practice by fabricating and operating our own custom carbonizer made entirely from reclaimed scrap metal. This allows us to convert local mill waste into a steady supply of "yet another black gold", the other being vermicast. CRH is a dual-pirpose asset: it is an internal soil amendment and is a high-demand, sellable farm product that generates extra revenue for the farm while simultaneously powering our own crop production.
What Is Carbonized Rice Hull?
CRH is created through pyrolysis, an incomplete combustion process of rice husks. Unlike wood ash (which turns to white/gray dust from complete burning), carbonizing retains the husk's rigid physical structure while converting it into a pitch-black, porous carbon skeleton.
Because it resists breaking down, CRH remains intact in garden beds for years, serving as a permanent physical upgrade to your soil structure.
